Exploring the Excitement: The Revolutionary Features of the V-Raptor [X] by RED
If you are a fan of RED cameras, you will be excited to hear that RED has launched two new models that combine the best features of its V-Raptor and Komodo families: the V-Raptor [X] and V-Raptor XL [X]. These cameras feature a new 8K VV global shutter sensor that enables innovative features such as Extended Highlights and Phantom Track. Whether you are shooting for cinema, television, or the web, the V-Raptor [X] and V-Raptor XL [X] can deliver stunning and dynamic images that will elevate your story.
The V-Raptor [X] is a compact and versatile camera that weighs just under 8 lbs. It has a locking Canon RF-style lens mount that supports a wide range of lenses, from small mirrorless to professional cinema models. It also has two 12G SDI outputs that can provide unique monitoring views, such as Phantom Track, which can streamline any virtual production environment. The V-Raptor [X] uses CFexpress Type B media that can handle up to 800MB/s formats, such as 8K 120P. The V-Raptor [X] also features improved in-camera audio pre-amps and a redesigned sensor cavity that reduces stray light and improves contrast performance.
The V-Raptor XL [X] is a larger and more robust camera that is designed to support high-end motion picture and television productions. It features dual-voltage battery support compatible with a wide range of common batteries found on set today, including both 14 V batteries and high-voltage 26 V V-Lock or Gold Mount options. It also features a built-in electronic ND that allows you to precisely select your density in 1/4, 1/3, and full-stop increments, providing unrivaled control of exposure and depth of field.
Both cameras use the new 8K VV global shutter sensor that offers a large format, global shutter, high framerate, and 8K acquisition, all in a compact and feature-rich body. The global shutter sensor eliminates the rolling shutter artifacts and provides more accurate motion capture and tracking. The sensor also enables the new RED Global Vision, a suite of tools that use the global shutter sensor to provide more flexibility and ease of use throughout the production process. RED Global Vision includes:
- Extended Highlights: This feature allows the camera to see color and detail in extreme highlights like never before, providing even softer and more subtle highlight roll-off when in uncontrollable environments, and an overall dynamic range of over 20 stops.
- Phantom Track: This feature dual-captures the video stream, creating distinct R3D clips per LED wall view, as well as allowing for monitoring of either view live on-set over each SDI. This feature streamlines any virtual production environment employing GhostFrame or frame-remapping.
The V-Raptor [X] and V-Raptor XL [X] also use the latest AtomOS 11 software, which is faster, cleaner, and more intuitive. The AtomOS 11 software adds new features such as vectorscopes, HLG/PQ previewing, false color, and more. The cameras also use the proprietary REDCODE RAW codec, which allows you to capture 16-bit RAW and leverage RED’s latest IPP2 workflow and color management tools.
