Before You Update

There is one detail FX6 owners should not overlook: if your camera is running version 5.02 or earlier, moving to version 6.00 will reset the camera back to default settings. Your previous setup will not carry over automatically.

If you want to keep your existing configuration, save your settings as an All File before starting the update, then reload that file after the firmware is installed.

Sony also recommends using the supplied AC adapter during the update and removing unnecessary accessories or media before you begin. That is the right move. Firmware installs are not the place to take shortcuts.

How the Update Works

Sony’s process is straightforward, but it needs to be followed carefully. The update file is downloaded to a computer first, then copied to the root directory of a properly formatted SDXC or CFexpress Type A card. Once that card is prepared, it must be inserted into slot B on the FX6 for the camera to detect the firmware package.

From there, the update is launched through the camera’s Maintenance menu. Sony says the process takes about 8 minutes, although actual timing can vary depending on the version you are updating from.

During the update, do not power the camera off and do not remove the card. That is the fastest way to turn a routine firmware update into a service problem.

Why This Update Matters

This release gives the FX6 a more polished and production-friendly feel. The BIG6 screen alone should appeal to operators who want quicker access to critical shooting data without digging through menus. Add in external Blackmagic RAW support, autofocus improvements, scene file portability, and better monitoring tools, and this becomes a meaningful update for working crews.

Not every firmware release changes how a camera feels in the field. This one has a real shot at doing exactly that.
