RED Unveils Tech Behind Hydrogen’s Holographs

You might not know everything about cameras and their makers, but perhaps at some point, you have come across RED. It is one of the leading companies that make some of the best and highly rated video cameras as well as sensors. Apparently, it revolutionized the film industry by producing the first ever 4k digital camera. A few months ago, when RED made a surprise announcement that it was working on an Android phone, many people were taken aback. Even more surprising is that the smartphone, Hydrogen One, would have a holographic display.
The company created a high level of anxiety, which up until now, we didn’t know much about. However, RED has now revealed a few insights into the screen technology behind the much-hyped Hydrogen One smartphone and how it works. The technology comes from an exclusive partnership with a startup known as Leia Inc., named after Princess Leia the films, Star Wars.
Leia Inc. was started in 2014 as a spin-off from Hewlett-Packard (HP) research labs. It commercializes on hardware and software for mobile that provides LCD screens with holographic displays. The screens can switch between 2D content and the projection of 3D content as well as interactive games. The working together of Leia and RED, Hydrogen One could just be the futuristic phone model we are yet to see.
How Does it Work?
According to Leia Inc., the holographic display
technology invested in Hydrogen One is solely based on conventional LCD
intrinsic diffraction. The display contains nanostructures that alter backlight
behavior, which makes the image have a better appearance of depth. The
holographic content will allow the smartphone users to rotate or tilt the
screen to view objects in #D and from different angles. Furthermore, Leia has
partnered with Synaptics to make it possible for users to manipulate and control
the appearance of objects using gestures.
The claims made by Leia also reveal that the technology will not impact on the battery’s life and consumption or the quality of the display for that matter. This means that the display could typically be used. One can easily switch from three-dimensional viewing to traditional 2D content. True or false, these claims are yet to be corroborated since there is no substantial data yet on the Hydrogen One and Leia’s actual performance. Only the YouTuber, Marques Brownlee, has had the privilege of testing the phone. He claims the device is impressive, but it could do with improvements.
When Will It Be Available?
The definite date that Hydrogen One smartphone will be available is not set yet. However, RED’s announcement cites that it will be available the first half of 2018, probably early. Although, what is clear as per now is that the phone has pre-orders for its two models. Titanium model for $1595 and $1195 for its aluminum body. There is a promise of gifts, which will ship with the first orders.
