ROSS Carbonite Switchers — UltraChrome Chroma Key
ROSS Carbonite Switchers — UltraChrome Chroma Key
Create precise, professional chroma keys for virtual studios, weather sets, and eSports broadcasts with Carbonite’s built-in tools.
With Carbonite, setup is quick and intuitive—choose your key color, initialize, dial in spill suppression, and fine-tune with advanced controls in seconds. Trusted by the biggest names in broadcast.
What UltraChrome Delivers
- Fast setup: select key color, initialize, and adjust spill suppression in seconds.
- Precision control: fine-tune edges, shadows, highlights, and translucency.
- Consistent results: professional quality keys across virtual studios, weather sets, and eSports broadcasts.
Chroma Key Modes
UltraChrome operates in two modes, selectable from the Personality menu as your preferred default:
Simple background/foreground chroma key with adjustments for background spill and edge softness.
Adds control for background shadow, translucency, and transition areas between background and foreground.
Note: Switching modes applies each mode’s own image correction. Moving from Basic to Advanced may change the image as Advanced parameters engage at defaults.
Set Up a Chroma Key (Step-by-Step)
- Select the chroma key output on a keyer so you can view results while adjusting parameters.
- Click Navigation Menu > Live Assist > Chroma Key.
- Click CK X for the chroma key engine you want to use.
- Click CK Source and choose the video source (physical input, Media-Store, MediaWipe, or an Aux Bus with a valid source).
- Click the Color button and select your background color (e.g., green or blue screen).
- Click Init to automatically remove the selected background color. Further tweaks are optional.
- Choose a Key Type:
- HR Wedge Key — standard chroma keying based on color vector angle/level discrimination.
- HR Detail Key — adds luminance dependency with a 3D spherical color discriminator.
- HR Combination Key — blends Wedge + Detail for high-luma edge capture and compensation where foreground/background levels are similar.
All adjustments are available regardless of the selected mode; some may not be applied by a specific mode.
Wedge Key Parameters
- Gain — Set Angle to 100 and Lift to 0, then raise until the background is fully removed with a reasonable edge. Too much gain hardens edges.
- Bkgd Luma Suppress — Compensates for uneven color/lighting to fully suppress the background.
- Angle — Adjusts the wedge shape used to classify fill (foreground) vs alpha (background) along the chosen color vector. Helps address heavy spill without hard edges.
- Lift — Amplifies the generated alpha to fill areas of transparency.
- Highlight Correction — Lifts areas with high luminance at edges caused by lighting, camera setup, or subject.
Tips: Balance Gain with Bkgd Luma Suppress. Use a box mask on the keyer to compare backgrounds; masked areas show the source without key settings.
Detail Key Parameters
- Clip — Sets the threshold between foreground and background. Aim for complete background removal; too high reduces edge quality.
- Gain — Lifts the fill to achieve solid content; setting too high may introduce dark boundaries.
- Shadow Sensitivity — Adjusts dark image areas, especially cast shadows.
- Shadow Density — Tunes the apparent lightness of dark/shadow regions in concert with Shadow Sensitivity.
- Highlight Sensitivity — Fills areas with specular highlights (e.g., reflective surfaces) that may reveal background.
Global & Miscellaneous Parameters
- Chroma Angle — Selects the detected fill color considered spill. Typically no adjustment needed.
- Re-Spill — Use Re-Spill Color and Re-Spill Sat to add back a color near the average background/lighting to areas contaminated by spill.
- Edge Softness — Filters edges to avoid hard, unnatural borders and adds depth-of-field realism.
- Bkgd Norm Adjust — Offsets detected chroma background level for fine tuning.
Tip: Fine details (e.g., hair) with luminance close to the chroma background can be challenging—use the advanced controls to prioritize separation and edge quality.
