The New Sony Venice Camera for High-End Cinema Production
Sony is a world-renowned company, and it showcased why it is one of the leaders in innovation with its feature-packed Venice camera. The new digital motion picture camera system delivers creative results in full-frame and comes with an interchangeable sensor that users can remove with just four screws. It has traits like the following that can be difficult to find in other cameras:
New Sensor for the New Camera
Venice combines a 36x24mm full frame sensor in user-selectable areas. It is larger than the previous Sony flagship F65, which has the Super35mm sensor. The new camera is capable of capturing images up to 6048 x 4032 pixels.
The sensor is equal to the size of the A7 and A9 series and is larger than the standard size found in motion picture cameras. When paired with a full-frame lens, the sensor permits a shallower depth and may provide better performance in lowlight compared to the Super35mm cameras.
Compatibility
What is great about the new Venice camera is that it can also shoot in the typical Super35 at 4k resolution. This way, it is compatible with different cinema lenses, such as full-frame PL mount glass and anamorphic, which are created for the mentioned format.
The user interchangeable sensor is easy to swap by merely unscrewing four screws. In this case, it can accommodate various shooting scenarios if there is a need of such in the future. The strategy is useful for the long-term, which makes this camera an excellent professional camera rental choice.
ND Filter
Sony has designed the camera with an eight-step neutral density (ND) filter. The mechanical ND filter ranges from one to eight stops to reduce light. While it is not hard to look for a studio camera with built-in ND filter today, most of the products that are found in the market only offer a three-step adjustment with a maximum of six stops.
This all-new eight-step ND is not just a first for the brand but also for the industry. The feature also allows the production equipment to be used at wide open apertures regardless of how bright the lights are. The filters significantly increase this camera’s flexibility, mainly when it is controlled remotely such as in cranes, drones, or even underwater housing.
Two Recording Media
The camera has a unique feature that enables the users to record simultaneously. For instance, it is possible to use XAVC, MPEG HD, or ProRes to edit offline, while also using RAW/X-OCN data through AXS-R7 to edit online. Both recording media are usable without the need for converting the files.
Venice is also capable of recording XAVC 4K for a fast turnaround at the same time as recording RAW/X-OCN, which is suitable for archiving with high-quality HDR apps.
Licensing
Sony also offers licensing options for the users. People these days are not interested in paying more money for features that should be available in a studio camera, such as Venice. Unfortunately, you may have to shell out some cash to enjoy specific functionalities.
Nevertheless, the product allows users to customize it based on their requirements for production. Licenses include weekly, monthly, and permanent periods, which would allow both full frame and anamorphic.
