Tilta Brings Autofocus to PL Lenses on Sony FX Cameras
Tilta Brings Autofocus to PL Lenses on Sony FX Cameras
Tilta’s new Nucleus Auto Focus Adapter bridges classic manual cinema glass with modern phase-detection autofocus—turning PL lenses into responsive AF tools on select Sony E-mount FX bodies.

Why this adapter matters on set
Cinema lenses are designed for manual precision—and that’s still the point. Tilta’s adapter adds a new option: reliable autofocus when speed matters, with the ability to instantly take back control for intentional pulls.
- E-Mount compatible with Sony FX3, FX30, and FX6 camera bodies
- PL mount compatible with rehoused vintage and high-end cinema lenses
- Lens Library makes loading lens profiles fast and simple
- Manual override via the MF button on the Nucleus-M II FIZ hand unit
- Custom designed for the Nucleus-M II and Nucleus Nano II wireless lens control systems
How it works (in plain terms)
- Your Sony FX camera generates phase-detection AF data directly from the sensor.
- The adapter translates that AF information into motor-driven focus movement via the Tilta Nucleus ecosystem.
- You get autofocus behavior (including face detection and eye tracking) while keeping the character and feel of PL lenses.
Lens profiles: fast starts and flexible calibration
A built-in lens profile library eliminates calibration for supported lenses—select your lens and start shooting right away. For unsupported or specialty glass, manual calibration allows users to map and save new lenses to the library.
These lenses can be mapped directly through the UI on the adapter, making it easy to add new lenses on the fly without stalling production.
Creative control stays in your hands
- Instant AF/MF override allows you to take manual control for precise focus pulls or creative racks—then release to return to autofocus.
- The adapter reads and displays real-time iris data on the Nucleus hand unit, enabling monitoring of actual aperture values even with fully manual lenses.
- When using the system with two wireless motors, users can adjust the iris via the camera’s electronic control.
