Top 5 Game-Changing Features in Sony BURANO V2.0 Firmware Update

Sony BURANO small build

Sony's latest free firmware update for the BURANO (Version 2.0) packs a serious punch, delivering a suite of enhancements that dramatically boost the camera's flexibility and performance. Whether you're shooting narrative, documentary, commercial, or live content, these new features are sure to elevate your workflow.

Here's a breakdown of the top 5 most requested features that are making waves in the filmmaking community:

1. Monitor FHD: Full-Screen Image, Clean View

The most requested feature is finally here. Monitor FHD mode moves the camera’s display information to a black border surrounding the image, allowing for an unobstructed view of your composition. This update applies across the EVF and SDI 1 & 2 outputs in all recording modes, ensuring what you see is exactly what you get.

2. New High Frame Rate Sensor Modes

Version 2.0 introduces Full Frame Crop 3.8K 16:9 recording at up to 120fps, giving filmmakers access to high-speed capture while maintaining their lens’s full field of view. Sony’s advanced subsampling and processing techniques ensure clean, cinematic results with minimized chroma noise and edge artifacts.

On the S35 side, the new 1.9K mode captures 1080p up to 240fps, perfect for slow-motion storytelling. Note: monitoring is disabled during high frame rate capture in this mode, except during playback.

3. Expanded Anamorphic Support

Filmmakers working with anamorphic glass will appreciate the new S35 4.3K 4:3 sensor mode, designed specifically for anamorphic capture. A new 1.8x stretch option joins the existing de-squeeze settings, allowing for accurate preview and monitoring of 2.40:1 widescreen content. This mode, available in X-OCN LT, meets streaming and theatrical specs with a native 4.3K horizontal resolution.

4. Improved Image Stabilization

Handheld shooters rejoice: stabilization just got a major boost. The Active Stabilization and SteadyShot High modes, previously limited to S35, are now available in both Full Frame Crop 6K and S35 1.9K modes. Active Stabilization combines mechanical and digital methods for smooth results, while SteadyShot High leverages OSS lens data to deliver even greater stabilization.

5. Hi/Lo Key Exposure Tool

Trusted by DPs on Sony’s flagship cinema cameras, the Hi/Lo Key exposure tool comes to BURANO. With a quick toggle, users can evaluate highlight or shadow retention on the fly, offering fast insights into dynamic range — ideal for unpredictable lighting situations like documentary work.
