6K Full-Frame Sensor
Canon has put its latest 6K CMOS sensor as the central component of the C400 camera, allowing it to deliver significantly reduced noise, enhanced sensitivity efficiency, and superior 4K visuals through 6K oversampling. These advancements are facilitated by the enhanced light-capturing capabilities of the back-illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor.
Triple-Base ISOs
The 6K CMOS sensor offers a selection of three ISO settings: 800, 3200, and 12,800, providing versatility to capture the vibrancy of locales such as Times Square or a sunlit landscape, as well as the subtleties of low-light environments like an indoor setting or a city skyline at night.
Multiple Recording Formats
- Various projects require tailored recording formats, and the C400 accommodates this need by offering up to 6K60 Cinema RAW and HQ, ST, and LT Cinema RAW Light 12-bit modes. Oversampled 4K with exceptional detail is accessible in 10-bit 4:2:2 with frame rates up to 120p, all without cropping the sensor image. Additionally, slow- and fast-motion capabilities allow for capture at rates up to UHD 4K120 and 2K180.
- Canon has simplified your editing workflow by introducing two new codecs: XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S. These codecs boast a more straightforward naming system, folder structure, and metadata preservation, all contained within the familiar MP4 format.
Dual Media Slots
The CFexpress Type-B and SD card slots on the C400 particularly appealing. These slots facilitate sub-recording and proxy capture using the SD card slot, while simultaneously allowing for raw recording using a CFexpress card.
Optional PL-Mount Adapter
Expand your lens options to encompass a variety of high-quality professional cinema lenses by utilizing the separately available PL-RF adapter for the C400. This adapter incorporates side lock plates for a secure attachment and transfers Cooke/i metadata for applications such as VF/X and other post-production purposes.
Mechanical ND Filters
Whether you're capturing cinematic features or shooting on-the-go footage for a documentary or event coverage, the capability to swiftly adjust up to 10 stops of ND filtration with the C400 proves invaluable. This almost instantaneous exposure adjustment allows you to preserve your desired depth of field, eliminating the necessity to adjust your lens aperture.
Improved Autofocus Function
In situations or entire shoots where you're without the assistance of a focus puller, the C400 presents Canon's dual-pixel autofocus feature, enhanced by the expanded area of the back-illuminated CMOS sensor, which is accessible for autofocus. Intelligent tracking allows for precise following of a subject's eyes, face, head, and body regions. Additionally, for nature documentary filmmakers, the C400 offers the capability to detect the eyes, face, or body of specific animals, unaffected by their size or facial orientation.
Production and Broadcast Features
- The adaptable C400 integrates multiple interfaces, catering to both film and broadcast productions. These ports comprise 12G-SDI, 3G-SDI, and HDMI video outputs, dual mini-XLR audio inputs, timecode, genlock, return video DIN connectors, and a 12-pin lens port.
- An automatic clear-scan mode for the shutter identifies the frequency of your light source, effectively minimizing or eliminating flickering often encountered with LED walls.
Ethernet/Wi-Fi Control and IP Streaming
The Ethernet port of the C400 along with Canon's IP-based XC protocol to incorporate RC-IP1000, RC-IP100, or third-party remote control shading into your broadcast-style shoot. The Canon RCCA (Remote Control Camera Application) is fully compatible with the C400, facilitating control over camera settings and multicamera operation. Moreover, the C400 provides IP streaming capabilities utilizing the SRT protocol.
Compact, Lightweight Body
Canon's RF lens mount is characterized by its short flange back, resulting in a reduced lens mount area and overall size. This feature renders it exceptionally suitable for gimbal, handheld, or drone capture, making it an ideal choice for various shooting scenarios.
LCD, Handle, and Grip
The C400 ergonomic enhancements, including a revamped touchscreen LCD, grip, and battery. Its LCD mount offers both angle and length adjustments, ensuring optimal positioning whether shooting handheld, shoulder-mounted, or on a tripod. The articulated handgrip features ergonomic design elements such as a multifunction shoe, three assignable buttons, and captive screws to prevent loss during grip mounting or detachment.
