The RF50mm F1.4 L VCM lens is part of the expanding Hybrid lens series, designed to meet the needs of both still-image and video creators. On full-frame cameras, it provides a standard-angle perspective, a focal length often chosen for its flexibility in both photography and videography.
For video use, the lens includes a manual iris control ring for smooth aperture adjustments and a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) linear focus motor that operates with minimal noise. The VCM works in tandem with a Nano USM (Ultrasonic Motor) in the floating focus unit, enabling fast and precise autofocus. Additionally, focus breathing is minimal, helping to maintain a consistent visual experience and emphasizing the subject without distractions.
High-Quality Optics
The RF50mm F1.4 L VCM benefits from the Canon RF mount, delivering excellent optical performance. Its design includes two UD elements and one aspherical element, along with coatings like Air Sphere Coating (ASC) and Super Spectra Coating (SSC) to reduce ghosting and improve clarity. The front and rear lens surfaces feature a fluorine coating to resist smudges. The lens also offers the durability of Canon’s L-series, including dust- and water-resistant construction, with seals around key components like the control ring, focus ring, zoom ring, operation panel, and lens mount.

Advanced Autofocus System
The RF50mm F1.4 L VCM introduces improvements to its focus system, combining a Nano USM for the floating focus unit with a VCM to power the rear focus unit. These motors work together to deliver fast and nearly silent autofocus. When the lens is not attached to a camera or the camera is powered off, slight movement or noise from the VCM may occur due to its design, which requires power to hold its position. This is normal, and the lens includes internal cushioning to prevent damage.
