Sony has announced the development of RIALTO 65, a new 65mm format image sensor block for the VENICE 2. Revealed on June 3, 2026, and shown at Cine Gear Expo in Los Angeles on June 5–6, RIALTO 65 is designed to expand the VENICE 2 platform into a 65mm digital cinema system while preserving the current VENICE 2 ecosystem.

This is not a brand-new camera platform. Instead, RIALTO 65 is an addition to VENICE 2, giving current and future VENICE 2 users a path toward larger-format production with greater scale, shallow depth of field, and flexible shooting configurations.

A 65mm Expansion for VENICE 2

RIALTO 65 is being developed as a modular image sensor block that pairs with existing VENICE 2 camera bodies. When connected, it effectively transforms VENICE 2 into a 65mm format digital cinema platform without requiring a full camera replacement.

The sensor measures approximately 53.75mm wide by 35.83mm tall, with a diagonal size of approximately 64.60mm. It supports 9.6K 3:2 open gate recording along with multiple readout modes for compatibility with a variety of 65mm format lenses.

Built for Flexible Production

Sony designed RIALTO 65 to work in more than one configuration. The sensor block can be mounted directly to the VENICE 2 body for a traditional studio setup or separated from the body using an extension-style cable system.

That flexibility matters on demanding sets. It gives cinematographers more options for handheld work, tight spaces, specialty rigs, cranes, gimbals, and other setups where camera size and weight distribution can affect the shot.

VENICE 2 Firmware V5.0 Also Announced

Alongside the RIALTO 65 development announcement, Sony also announced VENICE 2 firmware V5.0. The update introduces a new pre-installed Signature LUT for on-set monitoring, designed for natural color reproduction, enhanced skin tones, and smooth tonal gradation.

According to Sony, VENICE 2 will receive a free firmware update for RIALTO 65 compatibility, with no service upgrades or hardware modifications required.

What This Means for Cinematographers

RIALTO 65 signals that Sony is continuing to invest in the VENICE 2 platform rather than replacing it. For production teams already working with VENICE 2, this could offer a future upgrade path into 65mm capture while keeping familiar workflows, camera operation, and ecosystem compatibility.

For high-end narrative, commercial, and large-screen productions, the appeal is clear: more sensor area, more spatial depth, and more flexibility from a camera platform already trusted on professional sets.
