Sony Officially Announces RIALTO 65 for VENICE 2

9.6K Open Gate, dual base ISO, and a compact camera head bring Sony’s 65mm expansion system closer to production.

Sony RIALTO 65 Camera Extension System

Sony RIALTO 65 brings 65mm format capture to the VENICE 2 platform.

Sony has officially announced the RIALTO 65 Camera Extension System, confirming new details about its 65mm format expansion for VENICE 2. Announced on October 29, 2026, the system combines 9.6K imaging with a compact, detachable camera head and the recording workflow VENICE 2 users already know.

We first covered the project in our earlier blog about the RIALTO 65 development announcement. That preview introduced Sony’s plans for a larger-format VENICE 2 system. Now, confirmed sensitivity options, camera-head specifications, accessories, and pricing give production teams a clearer picture of what to expect.

Key Takeaways

  • 65mm format camera extension system for VENICE 2
  • 9.6K Open Gate at 1.5:1, plus a 9.6K 2.20:1 readout mode
  • Dual base ISO of 2500 and 10000
  • 15+ stops of latitude at base ISO 2500
  • Internal 16-bit X-OCN recording through VENICE 2
  • Approx. 1.5 kg camera head for direct or remote operation
  • Expected first-half 2027 availability; U.S. MSRP of $80,000

A Bigger Sensor, More Framing Possibilities

At the center of RIALTO 65 is a sensor measuring 53.75 × 35.83 mm, with an approximately 64.60 mm diagonal. Its imaging area is roughly 2.2 times that of a conventional 35mm full-frame sensor, giving cinematographers a substantial canvas for large-format storytelling.

The 9.6K 1.5:1 Open Gate mode uses the full sensor area, providing additional room to compose and reframe for different deliveries. A separate 9.6K 2.20:1 mode offers a wider frame with a smaller image diagonal, expanding lens coverage options. Lens selection and image-circle coverage will remain important parts of planning a RIALTO 65 package.

Dual Base ISO for Demanding Lighting

Sony has confirmed base ISO settings of 2500 and 10000. That higher sensitivity option could be especially useful for productions working with available light, night exteriors, or locations where adding substantial lighting is difficult.

Sony specifies 15+ stops of latitude at ISO 2500; that rating should not be assumed to apply to ISO 10000. RIALTO 65 also carries forward CineAlta color science, including S-Log3 and S-Gamut3, helping crews bring the larger format into familiar color workflows.

A Compact Head for More Creative Setups

The sensor may be large, but the camera head measures approximately 115 × 154 × 63 mm and weighs around 1.5 kg, or 3.3 lb. In Studio Mode, it attaches directly to VENICE 2. Extension Mode separates the head from the body, allowing crews to position the imaging section independently.

An included 4.5-meter cable supports remote operation, while an optional 12-meter cable adds reach. For vehicle interiors, handheld setups, and specialty rigs, that separation gives filmmakers more freedom to place a 65mm camera head where a complete camera package would be difficult to fit.

65mm Capture, Familiar VENICE 2 Operation

RIALTO 65 expands an existing camera platform. The VENICE 2 body handles recording, including internal 16-bit X-OCN capture to AXS media. For owners and rental houses, that means a path into 65mm production while continuing to use familiar controls, recording media, and post-production processes. RIALTO 65 operation requires dedicated VENICE 2 firmware version 6.00 or later.

Lens Options, Anamorphic Monitoring, and Drop-In ND

RIALTO 65 is designed for third-party lens-mount adapters and does not include a lens mount. Anamorphic monitoring features include multiple de-squeeze ratios and a Zoom to Fit function, helping operators check composition with their chosen lenses.

The system includes 11 interchangeable drop-in ND filters. These are physical filters with electronic contacts that allow VENICE 2 to recognize the inserted filter’s density. Exposure filtration is handled by swapping filters rather than adjusting an electronic variable ND.

Pricing and Expected Availability

Sony expects the RIALTO 65 Camera Extension System (CBK-6510XS) to become available in the first half of 2027, with a U.S. MSRP of $80,000. A VENICE 2 camera body is required.

Optional accessories are also planned for the first half of 2027. The 12-meter extension cable (CBK-12C6510) carries a U.S. MSRP of $9,000, while the replacement ND Filter Kit (CBK-NDK6510) is listed at $8,000. The replacement kit contains all 11 filters; Sony says individual densities will not be sold separately.

Maximum frame rates for the two 9.6K readout modes were not specified in Sony’s launch announcement. Availability and specifications remain subject to change as the system approaches release.
