Rode VideoMic Pro-R Compact Shotgun Microphone for consumer video cameras and DSLR
The Rode VideoMic Pro Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone delivers clear, directional audio in a compact and lightweight design. Offering improved sensitivity, lower noise, and greater recording flexibility compared to the original VideoMic, it is an excellent choice for mobile journalists, vloggers, independent filmmakers, and run-and-gun productions looking to improve their audio quality.
Powered by a single 9V battery, the VideoMic Pro provides up to 70 hours of operation and features an LED indicator that alerts users when battery power is running low. Adjustable gain settings and a selectable bass roll-off filter allow operators to tailor their recordings to different environments and sound sources.
The microphone features an integrated Rycote Lyre shockmount to minimize vibration noise, a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind interference, and a permanently attached 3.5mm TRS cable for convenient camera connectivity. Its dual-mono output sends the microphone signal to both recording channels without requiring additional channel configuration.
Directional Shotgun Microphone
The VideoMic Pro features a supercardioid polar pattern that emphasizes sound coming from directly in front of the microphone while reducing unwanted audio from the sides and rear. Its sensitive condenser element and low-noise electronics help capture detailed, natural-sounding audio compared to typical built-in camera microphones.
Simple Camera Connectivity
A permanently attached 3.5mm TRS cable provides a quick connection to compatible cameras and portable recorders. The dual-mono wiring sends the same microphone signal to both left and right input channels, simplifying recording setup.
Extended Battery Life
Operating on a single 9V battery, the VideoMic Pro offers up to 70 hours of runtime. Its power indicator changes from green to red when the battery is running low. The microphone can continue operating for approximately 10 hours after the indicator turns red, although audio performance may be reduced. A dedicated power switch helps conserve battery life when the microphone is not in use.
Selectable Bass Roll-Off Filter
The built-in high-pass filter offers flat and 80 Hz settings, allowing users to reduce unwanted low-frequency sounds such as traffic, air conditioning, and other environmental noise. This provides greater control over audio clarity in different recording situations.
Three-Stage Gain Control
The VideoMic Pro features three selectable gain settings to accommodate different recording levels and equipment configurations.
- +20 dB: Boosts the microphone signal when recording directly to cameras, reducing the need to rely heavily on the camera's internal preamp.
- 0 dB: Provides a neutral output level for use with dedicated, high-quality microphone preamps.
- -10 dB: Reduces the output level when recording louder sound sources to help prevent distortion.
Digitally switched controls provide convenient and precise gain adjustments during production.
Integrated Rycote Lyre Shockmount
The VideoMic Pro incorporates a durable Rycote Lyre suspension-style shockmount designed to reduce vibrations and handling noise transferred from the camera. Unlike traditional rubber-band suspension systems, the integrated design provides reliable support without the need for separate elastic components.
The shockmount includes a camera shoe mount and a 3/8" threaded connection, allowing the microphone to be mounted directly to a camera or compatible boompole, including the separately available Rode Micro Boompole.
Built-In Foam Windscreen
An integrated foam windscreen helps minimize unwanted noise caused by light breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioning. For additional wind protection during outdoor recording, the microphone can be paired with the optional Rode DeadCat VMPR furry windshield, available separately.
Expanded Connectivity Options
The VideoMic Pro can be used with additional devices through separately available Rode accessories.
- Rode SC4: Allows connection to compatible smartphones and tablets equipped with a 3.5mm TRRS input.
- Rode VXLR: Enables connection to camcorders, audio mixers, and other equipment featuring XLR microphone inputs.
These optional accessories expand the microphone's compatibility across a variety of video production and audio recording workflows.
